2019 IAM Legislative Conference Recap: We the People

IAM members’ voices were heard loud and clear last week during the 2019 IAM Legislative Conference in Washington, DC. The annual IAM Legislative Conference gives members from all over the country the opportunity to fight for policies that actually benefit working people and their families.

IAM members were able to hear speeches from elected officials, including many 2020 presidential candidates. Delegates also scheduled meetings with elected officials on Capitol Hill. Members met with their representatives to discuss issues like Buy America rules, fair trade, universal healthcare, good jobs, retirement security, the right to organize, and a host of other issues affecting IAM members.

Rep. Marc Veasey (D-TX) presented Machinists Union International President Bob Martinez with a Texas flag flown above the state capitol.

IAM members also attended a hearing on the Protecting the Right to Organize Act, or PRO Act, a labor law reform bill that would strengthen protections for workers’ rights to organize a union and bargain for higher wages, better benefits and safer working conditions.

Delegates heard from seven presidential candidates during the week: Sen. Cory Booker, former Rep. John Delaney, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Rep. Seth Moulton, Rep. Tim Ryan and Sen. Bernie Sanders.
