Hong Kong: BWI Delegation Participates in the Asian Asbestos Conference

A nine member BWI delegation consisting of trade union representatives from Malaysia, Korea, Philippines, Indonesia and India (including BWI Asia Pacific Regional Representative – Ambet Yuson and Global Health and Safety Director – Fiona Murie) attended the just concluded Asian Asbestos Conference in Hong Kong from 26 to 27 April 2009. The conference was organized jointly by the BWI, IMF, HKCTU, AMRC, ARIAV, IBAS, BANJAN, and BANKO and attended by over 200 delegates from 24 countries across the world.

The two day event was divided into 6 plenary sessions; 5 workshops and 2 break-out sessions. Members of the BWI delegation served as panelist in several workshops. The Regional Education Officer – Apolinar Tolentino moderated the discussions for the session on The Basic Facts about Asbestos, which among others had Fiona Murie (BWI); Sari Sairanen (CAW, Canada); Pat Preston (CFMEU, Australia) and two representatives from the OSH Center in Japan as the panelists.

The highlight of the conference was the launch of Asia Ban Asbestos Network (A-BAN) bringing together trade unions, victim groups, labour NGOs, researchers, academicians and many other smaller groups. The BWI is expected to play a key role in shaping A-BAN as a network of repute in the coming future and in the process lend strength to the Ban Asbestos Campaign, especially in the Asia Pacific region.


Pakistan:  PLF Organises a National Seminar on IWMD

A National Seminar was organized by Pakistan Labour Federation (PLF) with the Collaboration of International Labour Organization (ILO) and World Asian Workers Organization (WAWO).

100 Participants from all over the Country were participating including 2o women’s.
