IAM District 26 and Pratt and Whitney (P&W) recently opened a new round of contract talks covering 2,700 members at Local 700 in Middletown, CT and Local 1746 in East Hartford, CT.
Key issues for IAM members include job security and health care while P&W has already made their intentions known by proposing to cut at least 252 jobs in recent negotiation sessions. Pratt’s proposal would allow the company to bring in outside contractors that would perform work previously done by IAM members.
“The company’s recent attacks on our members’ job security are nothing new,” said District 26 Assistant Directing Business Representative and Chief Negotiator Mike Stone. “They have a long history of destroying good jobs, including a protracted court battle that ultimately led to shutting engine repair shops here. The membership sent the company a clear message supporting the negotiating committee with a strike authorization vote.”
IAM members voted overwhelmingly on November 8 to give the negotiating team strike authority.
“The negotiating team is fully prepared,” said District 26 Directing Business Representative Everett Corey. “The entire team participated in a week-long negotiation prep session at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center earlier this year, and the support of the membership is proof of that preparation.”
The current three-year agreement with P&W expires on December 8.
