IAM Organizing Department Wins Union Recognition for South Carolina Civilian Aircraft Workers

The IAM Organizing Department has secured another important victory for working people with the voluntary recognition of 50 civilian employees working at the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) in Beaufort, S.C. This organizing effort, led by IAM Western Assistant Organizing Coordinator Joseph Solis and Associate Organizer Robert Sumlin, brings these workers one step closer to securing a stronger voice, improved working conditions, and a brighter future that can be possible with a collective bargaining agreement.

The newly organized unit, aircraft mechanics employed by Aviation Management Analytical Consultants (AVMAC), provides vital maintenance and technical support on F-18 aircraft for the U.S. Marine Corps. With a strong majority of employees expressing their desire for IAM Union representation, AVMAC granted voluntary recognition, clearing the way for these workers to negotiate their first collective bargaining agreement.

“This group plays an essential role in supporting our nation’s defense, and they deserve the respect, voice, and stability that comes with a union contract,” said IAM Organizing Director Mike Evans. “These workers stood together because they wanted fairness on the job and a seat at the table, and the IAM is proud to stand with them.”

Even as the federal government faces uncertainty during a shutdown, the IAM Organizing Department continues to find creative and effective ways to support working people seeking union representation.

“This win shows that the IAM Union doesn’t stop fighting for working people, no matter the political climate,” said IAM Assistant Organizing Director Juan Eldridge. “When one door closes, we find another. Workers deserve representation every day, not just when it’s convenient for companies or the government.”

The IAM continues to grow its presence across the defense and aerospace sectors, ensuring that civilian and military support workers receive fair treatment and strong representation.

“Their decision to join the IAM reflects a growing movement among defense industry workers who want real job security, dignity, and a voice on the job,” said IAM Western Assistant Organizing Coordinator Joseph Solis. “We’re proud to welcome them into our union family.”
