IAM Stands in Solidarity with UAW Members at Big 3 as President Biden Lends Historic Strike Line Support

WASHINGTON, Sept. 25, 2023 – Robert Martinez Jr., International President of the 600,000-member International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), released the following statement strongly supporting United Auto Workers (UAW) members on strike:

“The IAM stands in unwavering solidarity with UAW members standing up for justice at the Big Three. These members have our full support for taking a courageous stand for their rights, job security, and fair working conditions.

“The IAM understands that the decision to go on strike is never taken lightly. It is a powerful demonstration of the unity and determination of union members seeking justice in their workplaces. We share a common commitment to the well-being of our members and protecting their hard-earned rights. Just as the IAM has done in the past, we commend the UAW for their dedication to fighting for the rights and dignity of their members.

“We welcome President Biden’s visit on the picket line. President Biden stands as a steadfast advocate and tireless champion for working families. He has delivered on his vision for our nation, centered on partnering with organized labor to provide good jobs with strong benefits and secure retirements. His presence on the picket line proves that he wants the economy to work well for everyone, not just for corporations and corporate CEOs.

“At a time when workers across various industries are under attack and facing increasing challenges, unions must come together to support one another. The struggles of UAW members are not isolated; they reflect a broader trend where workers are being asked to make sacrifices while corporations continue to profit. It is a stark reminder of the importance of collective bargaining, solidarity, and tireless advocacy for workers’ rights.

“We sincerely hope that a just agreement can be reached swiftly, ending the strike and allowing UAW members to return to their jobs with a stronger voice in the workplace, respect, and dignity.

“We want to assure UAW they are not alone in this fight. We pledge solidarity as they negotiate for fair wages, safe working conditions, and job security. Your fight is our fight, and together, we are stronger.”

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) is one of North America’s largest and most diverse industrial trade unions, representing approximately 600,000 active and retired members in the aerospace, defense, airlines, railroad, transit, healthcare, automotive, and other industries.
