IAM, TWU Ask National Mediation Board to Force American Airlines to Bargain

The Transport Workers Union-IAM Association at American Airlines is asking the National Mediation Board (NMB) to step in to stop the carrier’s delay tactics that have stalled contract negotiations.

“These negotiations have reached the critical end stage with the largest scope and economic issues yet to be resolved,” reads the letter to the NMB. “The Association feels that the necessary time required to finish the negotiations has not yet been met and that continued sessions are not only needed but would be productive.”

Negotiations between American Airlines and the TWU-IAM Association have been occurring since November 2015 and under NMB supervision since September 2018. More recently, American management has tried to circumvent the negotiating committee by filing a lawsuit, misrepresenting the facts to Congress and trying to negotiate directly with employees.

“Your Association negotiators remain ready to continue negotiations at any time, with or without the National Mediation Board,” reads a message to Association members at the carrier. “All we need is American Airlines to be willing to send people to negotiations with the authority to complete a deal.”

Both the TWU and the IAM jointly represent Fleet Service, Mechanic and Related, and Stores employees at the merged carrier. More information about the TWU-IAM Associations and its negotiations with American Airlines is available at usaamerger.com.
