IAM Union Midwest Territory Tours Historic C. Cretors & Company, Home of World-Famous Popcorn Machines

IAM Union Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli and IAM Union Local 701 Directing Business Representative Mark Grasseschi, along with other IAM Union leaders, recently toured C. Cretors and Company, a family-owned manufacturer in Wood Dale, Ill., known worldwide for its legendary popcorn machines.

For generations, IAM Union members at Cretors have proudly built the finest popcorn machines in the world. The IAM has represented workers at Cretors since the early 1950s, ensuring a strong labor-management relationship rooted in family and tradition.

“In a world where so much production has moved overseas, it’s essential that iconic products like Cretors popcorn machines are still union-made right here in Illinois,” said Cicinelli. “Every Cretors machine that leaves the shop floor ships with an IAM union label, and that’s a point of pride for our members and their families.”

“Our members have been creating magic at Cretors for decades,” said Grasseschi. “This is a family-owned business with family values, and our members are part of that family. It proves what can be accomplished when labor and management work hand in hand.”

Cretors & Co. holds a unique place in American history. The company, founded by Charles Cretors, revolutionized popcorn making by introducing the world’s first steam-powered machine at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Unlike street vendors who popped corn in baskets over open flames, Cretors’ invention allowed corn to be popped in hot oil, producing a more consistent product and transforming snacking forever.

The steam-driven popcorn carts quickly became fixtures outside theaters, at ballparks, and on fairgrounds. Over the years, the company also built wagons that roasted peanuts, baked chestnuts, and served hot drin

IAM members have helped Cretors remain an industry leader, with its machines featured in venues around the globe.
