The IAM Union Local 2198 Young Workers Committee recently partnered with their Community Service Committee to organize a winter blanket drive for those experiencing homelessness. This effort resulted in 30 bags filled with warm blankets, beanies, gloves, and emergency blankets to help prepare for the upcoming winter season. IAM Local members 2198 provided all donations.
Members of the IAM Union Local 2198 Young Workers Committee who participated include Young Workers Chairperson Quintarius Oliver and committee members Cora Walker and Eva Brooks.
IAM Union Local 2198 Community Service Committee Chairperson Albert Harmason, along with Community Service Committee members Maria Caban and Tamisha Hodges, participated in the event.
The Local 2198 Young Workers Committee continues to demonstrate leadership and solidarity beyond the workplace through a series of community service initiatives that support those in need across the Houston area.
In addition to the blanket drive, the Young Workers Committee recently hosted its Inaugural Dora Cervantes Bowling Fundraiser, bringing together IAM members, families and community supporters for a day of fellowship and solidarity. Proceeds from the event benefited Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines, supporting the organization’s mission to provide life-changing services at no cost to recipients.
The committee has also partnered with the Communities in Schools program at Elsik High School in Houston, donating more than 50 fully stocked backpacks to students in need ahead of the school year.
“This is a powerful example of union values in action,” said IAM Union Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen. “Local 2198’s Young Workers are stepping up to lead with compassion, proving that our union’s commitment to service extends well beyond the job.”
IAM Union Local 2198 President Enrique Bojórquez praised the growing role of young members in shaping the local’s outreach efforts.
“Our Young Workers are setting the standard for what it means to be engaged, active union members,” Bojórquez. “From fundraising to hands-on service, they continue to show up for both our community and our union.”
Through continued outreach and service, IAM Local 2198 Young Workers remain committed to strengthening their community while living the core values of the IAM.
