IAM Union workers at Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico (LTPR), standing shoulder to shoulder with union allies and community supporters, rallied outside the company’s Aguadilla facility this week to demand what they have earned: a fair contract that values their labor, safety, and dignity.
For nearly three years, the skilled aviation workers at LTPR have been at the bargaining table – yet the company continues to stall, refusing to act in the best interests of its workers. While Lufthansa Technik profits off the professionalism and dedication of these workers, it has failed to offer a contract that reflects their worth or improves the lives of those who make its operations possible.
“These workers have waited long enough,” said IAM Southern Territory General Vice President Craig Martin. “LTPR’s refusal to move on a fair contract is a blatant disregard for the very people who keep this company running. This fight is about respect, safety, and securing a better future for these families in Puerto Rico.”
The rally brought together union members, community leaders, and allies who echoed the same message: enough is enough. The workers are demanding basic human needs that the company continues to neglect.
“Lufthansa Technik has a choice: invest in the people who power your success or continue this pattern of delay and disrespect,” said IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen. “Our members in Puerto Rico are standing strong – and the IAM stands with them. We will not back down until justice is delivered at the bargaining table.”
In May 2022, over 200 aircraft mechanics and related workers at LTPR voted overwhelmingly to join the IAM Union, seeking a voice on the job and a fair deal. Since then, progress at the bargaining table has been stonewalled by the company’s refusal to come forward with meaningful proposals. The IAM requested federal mediation from the National Mediation Board in 2023 in response to the company’s continued inaction.
This struggle has now drawn international solidarity. Verdi, a major German union representing Lufthansa workers across Europe, has called on Lufthansa AG – LTPR’s parent company – to step in and help end the contract dispute.
“LTPR can’t hide from its responsibilities – this fight is global now, and the world is watching,” added Martin. “IAM Union members in Puerto Rico are not alone. The entire IAM Union family stands behind them.”
The IAM Union is urging LTPR leadership to return to the table with real solutions that honor the value and professionalism of its workforce – not more empty promises.
Los trabajadores de la Unión IAM en Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico (LTPR), hombro a hombro con aliados sindicales y miembros de la comunidad, se manifestaron la semana pasada frente a las instalaciones de la compañía en Aguadilla para exigir lo que se han ganado: un convenio justo que valore su trabajo, su seguridad y su dignidad.
Durante casi tres años, estos trabajadores altamente calificados de la industria aeronáutica han estado negociando en la mesa de convenios, pero la compañía sigue obstaculizando el proceso, negándose a actuar en favor de su propia fuerza laboral. Mientras Lufthansa Technik se beneficia del profesionalismo y la dedicación de estos trabajadores, ha fallado en ofrecer un convenio que refleje su verdadero valor o que mejore la vida de quienes hacen posible sus operaciones.
“Estos trabajadores ya han esperado suficiente,” declaró Craig Martin, Vicepresidente General del Territorio Sur de la IAM. “La negativa de LTPR a avanzar hacia un convenio justo es una falta de respeto descarada hacia las mismas personas que mantienen a esta compañía operando. Esta lucha se trata de respeto, seguridad y de asegurar un mejor futuro para estas familias en Puerto Rico.”
La manifestación reunió a miembros de la unión, líderes comunitarios y aliados que compartieron un mismo mensaje: ya basta. Los trabajadores están exigiendo condiciones laborales básicas que la compañía sigue ignorando.
“Lufthansa Technik tiene una elección: invertir en las personas que hacen posible su éxito, o continuar con este patrón de demora y desprecio,” expresó Richie Johnsen, Vicepresidente General del Territorio de Transporte Aéreo de la IAM. “Nuestros miembros en Puerto Rico están firmes – y la IAM está con ellos. No retrocederemos hasta que se logre la justicia en la mesa de negociaciones.”
En mayo de 2022, más de 200 mecánicos de aeronaves y trabajadores relacionados en LTPR votaron abrumadoramente a favor de unirse a la IAM, en busca de una voz en el trabajo y una mejor vida. Desde entonces, el progreso en la mesa de negociaciones ha sido bloqueado por la negativa de la compañía a presentar propuestas significativas. En 2023, la IAM solicitó la mediación federal de la Junta Nacional de Mediación debido a la continua inacción de la compañía.
Esta lucha ya ha despertado solidaridad internacional. Verdi, un importante sindicato alemán que representa a trabajadores de Lufthansa en Europa, ha hecho un llamado a Lufthansa AG – la empresa matriz de LTPR – para que intervenga y ayude a resolver la disputa contractual.
“LTPR no puede esconderse de sus responsabilidades – esta lucha ya es global y el mundo está mirando,” añadió Martin. “Los miembros de la IAM en Puerto Rico no están solos. Toda la familia de la IAM está con ellos.”
La IAM está exigiendo que la gerencia de LTPR regrese a la mesa de negociación con soluciones reales que honren el valor y la profesionalidad de su fuerza laboral – no con más promesas vacías.
