Chesapeake Raytheon Workers Vote Overwhelmingly to Join Machinists Union
WASHINGTON, Aug. 22, 2019 – A group of 60 workers at the Raytheon Co. in Chesapeake, Va., voted more than 75 percent in favor of joining the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM).
The group consists of engineering technicians, radar operators, electronic technicians and electronic maintenance technicians at Chesapeake’s Naval Support Activity Annex. The workers support the mission of the U.S. Navy.
“These highly-skilled individuals understood their only chance to improve wages and benefits was through collective bargaining,” said IAM Grand Lodge Representative Mike Evans, the lead organizer on the campaign. “They selected the Machinists Union because of our experience in the Service Contract arena.”
“These working men and women stood strong and prevailed in their election because they saw true value in belonging to a union and being able to collectively bargain their wages and benefits for their families,” said IAM Organizing Director Vinny Addeo.
