Brussels, 05 December 2014 (ITUC OnLine): The main Indian trade union centres are holding nationwide strike action today, in protest at the BJP government’s plans to weaken labour laws.

“The people brought BJP to power with an absolute majority but from day one the new government has taken various steps to help employers run industry as they want,” said Harbhajan Singh Sidhu, General Secretary of ITUC affiliate Hind Mazdoor Sabha.

Sharan Burrow, ITUC General Secretary, said “removing vast numbers of people from the protection of labour laws will undermine living standards for ordinary people, and increase inequality and insecurity.  The very richest in India will benefit while workers will find it even more difficult to make ends meet.  We call on Prime Minister Modi to step back from these unfair and damaging reforms, and open a genuine dialogue with India’s trade union movement.”
