Americans Feel Free Trade Cuts Local Jobs

December 6, 2005 – A recent survey shows that a majority of Americans believe free trade cuts local jobs, while mainly benefiting multinationals and economies such as China and India. Respondents from most of Europe’s big countries also believe free trade hurts local jobs.

A survey from the German Marshall Fund of the United States found 82 percent of respondents feel free trade benefits mostly multinationals and fast-growing developing economies like China and India. Meanwhile, 58 percent of Americans and Europeans said they would support raising tariffs to protect local jobs.
