The IAM Union is applauding the growing number of congressional leaders calling on Boeing to negotiate in good faith as 3,200 IAM District 837 members continue their seventh week on strike at Boeing Defense facilities in St. Louis, St. Charles, Mo., and Mascoutah, Ill.
Members of the Congressional Labor Caucus and U.S. Reps. Wesley Bell (D-Mo.) and Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) sent letters to Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg urging the company to resolve the strike and negotiate a fair contract.
“I want to thank Congressmen Bell and Cleaver, as well as the Congressional Labor Caucus, for standing with our members in this fight,” said IAM Union International President Brian Bryant. “Boeing has galvanized our membership like never before with their insulting tactics—by dismissing employees’ right to a democratic vote on their futures and by refusing to make meaningful improvements after three overwhelming rejections. IAM District 837 members in St. Louis have the rightful expectation to be treated like Boeing employees across the country. It’s a slap in the face for Boeing to refuse to listen to its employees and negotiate fairly.”
On Friday, Sept. 19, IAM District 837 members will vote on a union-proposed four-year strike settlement offer. Boeing has dismissed the union’s effort to end the strike as “a waste of time.”
The strike, which began on Aug. 4, has drawn increasing support from elected officials, community allies, and labor leaders who recognize the vital role IAM District 837 members play in assembling and maintaining advanced military aircraft and defense systems. The IAM continues to call on Boeing to respect its workforce and work toward a fair settlement.
