Local 1487 Women’s Committee Hosts 6th Annual ‘Go For Red’ Luncheon to Promote Heart Health Awareness

IAM Union Local 1487 members recently joined together for the Women’s Committee’s 6th annual “Go For Red” Luncheon, an educational event held in recognition of Heart Health Month. Organized by Local 1487 Women’s Committee Chairperson April Walker and her dedicated team, the annual gathering combined important health information with activities designed to promote wellness, connection, and community.

“Events like the Go For Red Luncheon show that taking care of our members goes beyond the job, it’s about supporting their health, their families, and their future,” said IAM Local 1487 Women’s Committee Chair April Walker.

The event featured a mix of informative speakers, light physical activity, and plenty of fun. Participants kicked off the day with energetic icebreakers led by the 40 plus Double Dutch Club, reconnecting with their childhood through double dutch and hula hoop activities that got everyone moving and laughing. The power of laughter was also on full display thanks to a comedic performance from comedian and actor Teresa Sykes.

“Programs like this demonstrate the power of solidarity in action,” said IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen. “When members come together to learn, support each other, and raise awareness about critical health issues, it strengthens not just our union, but our entire community.”

Keynote speaker Joni Rials from the American Heart Association delivered an interactive presentation highlighting how chronic stress and hereditary factors can contribute to heart disease. Rials also emphasized the increased risk women face during menopause, explaining how decreased estrogen levels, a natural heart protectant that can significantly impact women’s heart health.

“Our union is strongest when our members are healthy and informed,” said IAM Air Transport Territory Chief of Staff Edison Fraser. “By bringing in experts and creating a welcoming space for conversation, Local 1487 is helping members take control of their health and look out for one another.”

Attendees also were inspired by a powerful personal testimony from retired United Reservations Agent and District 141 Assistant General Chair Laura Stone. Stone shared her lifelong heart health journey, which began in childhood and led to her first pacemaker at age 44. Now 69 and on her third unit, Stone encouraged attendees to prioritize their health, reminding them, “Take your health seriously and listen to your doctor; it can save your life.”

The event welcomed several social guests, including Air Transport Territory International Representatives Kris Hannah and Andrea Myers, District 141 Assistant General Chair Tony Gibson, and Trustee Derrick Monk, all of whom showed strong support for the Women’s Committee’s ongoing health and wellness initiatives.
