IAM Union Western Territory General Vice President Robert “Bobby” Martinez recently traveled to Hawaii to visit members of IAM Local 1998, reinforcing the vital role the Local plays within the IAM’s Western Territory and the broader labor movement. The visit served as a powerful reminder that even across the Pacific, the work performed by Local 1998 members is central to the strength and mission of the union.
Chartered in 1951, Local 1998 has built a proud legacy of representation, advocacy and service. For more than seven decades, the Local has stood as a cornerstone of the IAM’s presence in Hawaii, contributing significantly to the Western Territory’s stability and growth. Its longevity reflects not only the enduring need for strong union representation in the region but also the dedication of generations of members who have upheld the principles of solidarity and collective bargaining.
“Our Hawaiian members play a pivotal role in our union,” remarked GVP Martinez. “Their solidarity through cultural diversity is empowering and the role our members play in the name of national defense is felt from coast to coast.”
During his visit, Martinez emphasized the importance of Local 1998 to the Western Territory. Hawaii’s unique geographic position makes the Local especially significant, both economically and nationally. The Local’s members are deeply integrated into industries that are critical to infrastructure and defense, making their work indispensable. Martinez acknowledged that the contributions of these members extend well beyond their workplaces, impacting national security and the broader defense framework of the country.
Many Local 1998 members play an integral role in supporting national defense operations. Their skills, expertise, and professionalism help ensure operational readiness and mission success. Martinez recognized that the responsibility carried by these members is substantial and that their union representation must be equally strong and responsive. He reaffirmed the IAM’s commitment to protecting their rights, securing fair contracts, and ensuring safe working conditions so they can continue performing this essential work with confidence and dignity.
GVP Martinez’s visit highlights the remarkable diversity of Local 1998’s membership. Reflecting the rich cultural fabric of Hawaii itself, the Local brings together members from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. Martinez praised this diversity as a source of strength, noting that unity across cultures and communities strengthens the IAM and enriches the entire Western Territory. The shared commitment to solidarity, regardless of background, stands as a testament to the inclusive values of the IAM.
Throughout his time in Hawaii, Martinez met with members and local leadership to discuss priorities, listen to concerns and chart a path forward. His presence reinforced the International’s dedication to staying connected with Locals across the Territory, ensuring that distance never diminishes representation or support.
As Local 1998 continues its proud tradition of service and advocacy, Martinez’s visit underscored a clear message: the Western Territory is strongest when every Local is supported, heard and united. From its foundational role in 1951 to its modern-day contributions to national defense and community strength, Local 1998 remains a vital pillar of the IAM family.
