Joblessness Rampant Among Katrina Evacuees

Joblessness among evacuees of Hurricane Katrina continues to be a major problem, suggesting policy intervention may be the only way to get evacuees back to work.

The Economic Policy Institute reports only about half of African American evacuees who have looked for work and are still away from home have been able to land a job. 42 percent of Hispanics and 24 percent of whites who haven’t been able to return home are still without a job.
