Kentucky Labor Council Honors GST Mart

The Tri-County Council of Labor in Eastern Kentucky presented its 2010 Community Service Awards to local volunteer activist Haley Gibson and IAM General Secretary-Treasurer Warren Mart. The Tri-County Council also presented its first-ever scholarship award and recognized the volunteer work of three apprentice plumbers who installed a new plumbing system free of charge for a disabled Owensboro, KY, resident.

“The IAM is very fortunate to have an active Community Services Department as well as hundreds of local lodge community service committees that coordinate their activities,” said Mart. “I’d like to think that the work we do at the bargaining table is a community service as well. When we fight for pensions or for retiree health care, we’re supporting a better standard of life for the entire community. The same is true for good wages.”

The awards ceremony was covered in an article by The Gleaner, a daily newspaper from Henderson, KY, which regularly features the community service work of local labor unions.

“I’m very proud of the community service work we all do,” said Mart. “It’s an honor to accept this award on behalf of all the people in the labor movement who don’t turn away when they’re asked to help.”
