IAM CORE Members at First Unionized U.S. Apple Retail Store Vote To Authorize Strike

TOWSON, Md., May 11, 2024 – Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ (IAM) Coalition of Organized Retail Employees (IAM CORE) have overwhelmingly voted in favor of authorizing a strike at the Apple retail store located in Towson, Md. The vote underscores the frustrations among workers regarding unresolved workplace issues. A potential work stoppage date will be determined by IAM CORE.

Following over a year of negotiations with Apple management that yielded unsatisfactory outcomes, IAM CORE members took a significant step by voting in favor of a strike at the Apple Towson store, signaling their collective demand for meaningful change. The issues at the forefront of this action include concerns over work-life balance, unpredictable scheduling practices disrupting personal lives, and wages failing to align with the area’s cost of living.

“This vote today is the first step in demonstrating our solidarity and sends a clear message to Apple,” said members of the IAM CORE Negotiating Committee. “The passage of the strike sanction vote highlights IAM CORE’s unwavering commitment to advocating for the rights and well-being of workers in the face of challenges. As discussions with Apple management continue, we remain committed to securing tangible improvements that benefit all employees.”

Earlier this year, IAM CORE released findings from its independent survey of Apple employees in response to the tech giant’s recent “Workers Rights Assessment,” commissioned to address shareholder concerns and employee activism. The survey uncovered discrepancies with Apple’s official report and highlighted a concerning pattern of alleged illegal behavior by the company. The survey highlights unlawful terminations and collective punishment directed toward workers seeking to exercise their right to organize and join a union.

According to the Chief Investment Officer, a group of institutional investors led by New York City’s five pension funds also released a highly critical report on a workers’ rights assessment of tech giant Apple Inc. conducted by law firm Jenner & Block LLP.

IAM CORE represents approximately 100 employees at Apple’s retail store in Towson, Md. IAM CORE members, who in June 2022 became the first Apple retail store to organize into a union in the United States, have been negotiating with Apple management since January 2023.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) is one of North America’s largest and most diverse industrial trade unions, representing approximately 600,000 active and retired members in the aerospace, defense, airlines, railroad, transit, healthcare, automotive, and other industries.
