
IAM General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes has appointed Kurt Burkhart to serve as the newest Grand Lodge Auditor. The appointment is effective July 1, 2024, and Burkhart’s assignment will cover IAM Districts and Locals in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
Burkhart initiated into IAM Local 1746 in 2015 as an aerospace overhaul and repair machinist at Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, Conn., becoming Secretary-Treasurer in September 2017. In 2020, he became District 26 Secretary-Treasurer.
“Kurt’s dedication and extensive experience, from his roots as a machinist to his leadership roles within the IAM, exemplify his unwavering commitment to service,” said Cervantes. “As a newly appointed Grand Lodge Auditor, he will bring his passion for advocacy, a strategic vision, and relentless drive for excellence to the Grand Lodge Auditors Team.”
Burkhart also served as a shop steward as well as being elected to numerous committees including the Training, Bylaws, Human Rights, Newsletter, Organizing, Legislative, Building, House and Negotiations committees. He was also instrumental in developing training for new hire orientations and shop steward training.
He has been a delegate to the Connecticut State Council of Machinists, Hartford Labor Council, Eastern State Conference of Machinists, Aerospace Conference, New England Conference of Machinists, Grand Lodge Convention, and District 26.
Burkhart is proud to have assisted in numerous fundraising efforts, including for Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines, the Machinists Non-Partisan Political League (MNPL) and a yearly Golf tournament to support local food banks.

Burkhart served as a fire captain and EMT at his local volunteer fire department, overseeing the driver training program as an instructor. In 2012, he received the town’s first Firefighter of the Year award for his commitment and dedication to the community. Burkhart is pursuing a bachelor’s of science in accounting.
