UCubed: Unemployed Poised to Deliver Payback

Nearly four years after the collapse of Lehman Brothers and the start of the nation’s worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, millions of jobless Americans find themselves held hostage by a GOP agenda that alternates between calls for drug testing to blaming the unemployed for causing the nation’s jobless crisis.

“Four years ago, the GOP rushed to the aid of the banks, brokerage and insurance firms,” said UCubed Executive Director Rick Sloan. “They took care of their sources of corporate campaign cash and left the jobless in a dungeon of despair. Tomorrow’s unemployment numbers will simply underscore the GOP strategy of putting its party’s finances before problem solving.”

Republican opposition to extending unemployment benefits has become a hallmark of a Congress that now claims a 16 percent approval rating, according to Gallup. Oblivious to public outcry, the GOP continues to block benefits while demanding billions in tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.

“Every so often, the GOP would threaten to shoot their hostages if the Bush tax cuts weren’t extended or deep cuts in spending were not adopted,” said Sloan. “The GOP now wants the jobless to believe their hostage-taking was really just tough love for their own good. Good luck with that line of propaganda.”
