In an emotional moment that celebrated the bonds of family, the value of tradition and Cincinnati’s role in IAM history, International President Tom Buffenbarger was presented with a gavel made especially for the 36th Grand Lodge Convention by his father, retired IAM member Bob Buffenbarger. A lifelong IAM activist, Bob Buffenbarger also crafted the gavel wielded by IAM President Bill Winpisinger at the 30th IAM Convention in 1980. “This one was made with affection, with love and with respect for what Tom has done and for what this union has done,” said the elder Buffenbarger, who was joined on stage by his wife Betty for the historic tribute.
President Tom Buffenbarger and General Secretary-Treasurer Warren Mart honored retired GST Don Wharton’s outstanding career, awarding him his 50-year IAM membership pin and special certificate. “We’re proud to make this award at this Convention for the superb job you did on behalf of this union and its members,” said Buffenbarger. Also honored for 50 years of service was retired General Vice President for Canada Val Bourgeois. “Fifty years of continuous service is an outstanding accomplishment,” said Buffenbarger. |
