GDA: Changing Lives, One Dog at a Time

Shot in and around GDA’s Sylmar, CA breeding and training facility, the video, titled ‘IAM’s Guide Dogs of America Changes Lives’ features students and graduates describing the feelings of confidence, liberation and independence that comes with having a guide dog.
“For me, Guide Dogs of America has completely changed my life,” says Kristi Stone, a GDA graduate who opens the video. “Before I came here I was much more closed off to doing things independently. Just from being in class and my experience with the trainers and just everything they offer here is such an asset to a visually-impaired person’s life.”
Founded by a Machinist union member more than 60 years ago, GDA is unique for the services they provide, and for the core values that guide its mission.
“Since the founding days of this school, access to this school and the training and all the facilities have been available to anyone, regardless of union membership, all at absolutely no charge to the person receiving the dog,” said IAM President Tom Buffenbarger. “This is really what the labor movement is about – helping people.”
