Australian Union Calls for IKEA Boycott

The Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU), an Australian union representing woodworkers down under, called on holiday shoppers to boycott retail furniture giant IKEA, over the refusal by a U.S. subsidiary to allow its workers to join a union.

“It is Scrooge-like at this time of year for IKEA, which makes billions in profits, to refuse to allow 300 workers in one of their subsidiaries to join their union.” said CFMEU National Secretary Michael O’Connor, who called for the holiday boycott.

The IAM has been working for more than a year to bring fairness and collective bargaining rights to the workers at Swedwood, the 100 percent IKEA-owned subsidiary in Danville, VA. The effort has attracted international attention, including a protest by labor representatives from 25 countries in front of IKEA headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
