    Comprehensive Rail Safety and Amtrak Funding Authorization Legislation Wins Senate Approval, Bill Now Awaits Presidential Signature

    By a vote of 74-24, the Senate on Wednesday, October 1, passed the Rail Safety Improvement Act of 2008 and its companion bill, the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act of 2008.  The legislation tightens rail safety protection and authorizes $13.1 billion for Amtrak over five years.     Labor and RRB Respond to Investigation at the Long Island Rail Road

    A group of unions including TCU issued a press release September 25, 2008 regarding the “many misleading articles recently from various news sources that have badly mischaracterized the railroad retirement occupational disability program and the railroad retirement system itself” in an  investigation at the Long Island Rail Road.  Also releasing a statement is V. M. Speakman, Jr., labor member of the Railroad Retirement Board.
